More work needs to be done in order to craft an essay that makes you trulystand out. When free writing about a topic, you may stumble onto an idea even better than your original. If you’ve never done it before, free writing is just taking a topic and writing anything that comes into your head. Just take a blank document or sheet of paper, set a timer for minutes, and start writing. Really, the success of your essay will come down not to what you write about, but how. As always, be as specific as possible, and pay attention to the writing itself, not just the content. This is a story about you and your connection to the school â€" not just a list of reasons. Let’s start with mistakes to avoid when writing your essay. Relate to the reader the full scope of an experience â€" sights, sounds, and maybe even smells. The fewer words you can use to relay your message, the better. Such writing asks the writer to be more creative about the way phrases and sentences are worded. Be careful, however, not to overuse imagery; otherwise the essay may sound forced, unnatural and give the reader the impression you are trying too hard to be creative. DO write about what you know and have observed or experienced, not things beyond your personal development as a teenager. Book knowledge or secondhand information does not convey to the reader any sense of who you are. Listening to yourself reading your essay aloud will help you understand what is clear and what is confusing. Don’t start with the end in mind, write to find out what you actually have to say.
